How to Convert HEIC to PNG on Windows

PNG is useful when a destination requires it or you want a checked, lossless-format copy. It is not the best answer for every photo.

Method 1 · No Windows codec

Convert HEIC to PNG privately in your browser

This route works even when Photos or Paint cannot open the file. Follow the current converter controls below; no Windows Photos or codec setup is required.

1. Open the HEIC to PNG converter

   Open the converter in a current browser. This route does not depend on Windows Photos, Paint, or an installed HEIC codec.

2. Choose HEIC or HEIF files

   Choose files from your PC, or drag them from File Explorer. The converter checks the real file type before conversion.

3. Review the files and output size

   Keep Original size or choose Custom size. The converter will not enlarge an image beyond its decoded dimensions.

4. Convert and download the PNG copies

   Select Convert files, then download each completed PNG. A ZIP option appears only when a safe batch download can be created.

Method 2 · If Paint already opens HEIC

Save an HEIC file as PNG with Paint

Use these steps only if Paint already opens the HEIC image. Windows editions, installed media components, and individual HEIC files can behave differently, so this is not a universal or installation-free route.

   Open the HEIC file in Paint

   In File Explorer, right-click the image, choose Open with, and select Paint. If Paint reports an unsupported file, use Method 1 or check Windows HEIC support below.

   Choose File, Save as, PNG picture

   Use Save as so the HEIC original remains available. Select PNG picture as the new format.

   Choose a filename and destination

   Save the .png copy in a different folder or with a clear filename, then open it to confirm the result.

Troubleshooting

Fix common Windows HEIC conversion problems

Photos or Paint cannot open the HEIC file

Try the browser method, which does not use the Windows HEIC codec. If you only need to inspect the photo, use the local HEIC Viewer. For native viewing, check the Microsoft extension information above.

The browser says the file is not HEIC or HEIF

Renaming a JPG or another file to .heic does not convert it. Copy or download the original again from Photos, iCloud, email, or the source device.

The file could not be read

The download may be incomplete, the file may be damaged, or it may use an unsupported HEIF feature. Try a current browser and obtain a fresh copy of the original.

The file or batch is too large

The browser method accepts up to 20 files per batch, 25 MB per file, and 100 MB of input per batch. Images are also limited to 32 megapixels, and available memory can lower the practical batch size. Convert fewer files together or export a smaller source image.

The PNG is much larger than the HEIC

This is normal for many photos because PNG and HEIC use different compression. If a smaller broadly compatible photo is the goal, create a JPG copy instead.

The ZIP button is unavailable

Download each completed PNG individually. ZIP creation is skipped when the batch is too large for your browser's available memory.

A Live Photo or multi-image HEIF exports one image

The converter exports the first decoded still image only. It does not extract every HEIF image or the companion Live Photo video.
