Why Are iPhone Photos HEIC Instead of JPG?

Starting with iOS 11, iPhone can save photos in HEIF/HEIC when Camera Formats is set to High Efficiency. Apple uses HEIC because it can keep file sizes smaller while preserving strong image quality, which helps save storage on your phone and in iCloud.

HEIC is useful, but JPG is still more widely accepted by older apps, upload forms, printers, Windows PCs, and other devices. Convert HEIC photos to JPG when compatibility matters.

Method 1

Change iPhone Camera Settings to Save JPG

This setting stops iPhone from taking new HEIC photos. It does not convert photos already saved in your library, but it is the best fix if you want future photos as JPG.

  1. Open Settings

On your iPhone, open Settings and scroll down to Camera.

  2. Tap Camera, then Formats

The Formats screen controls whether iPhone prioritizes smaller HEIC files or more compatible JPEG files.

  3. Select Most Compatible

Choose Most Compatible to save future camera photos as JPEG instead of HEIC.

  4. Keep existing HEIC originals

Photos already taken as HEIC stay HEIC. Use Files or an online converter when you need JPG copies of those older photos.

Method 2

Convert HEIC to JPG Using the Files App

On newer iOS versions, the Files app can convert images with Quick Actions. This is handy when you want to convert a saved HEIC image on the phone without installing another app.

  1. Save the photo to Files

Open Photos, select the HEIC image, tap Share, then choose Save to Files.

  2. Open the image in Files

Go to the Files app and find the HEIC photo you saved.

  3. Use Quick Actions

Long press the image, choose Quick Actions, then choose Convert Image.

  4. Choose JPEG

Choose JPEG for the new copy. Files creates a new JPG while leaving the original HEIC file available.

Method 3
